What Happened: Happy NFL Draft Day to all who celebrate!
Round 1 kicks off tonight, and while there’s no question about who comes off the board first, there are plenty of questions about how the rest of the selections will play out. Trades, surprise picks, Mel Kiper rants. Bring it all baby!
Why It Matters: Caleb Williams at no.1 and Jayden Daniels at no. 2 seem locked in, but the intrigue starts in New England.
Does Robert Kraft go back to the “Michigan QB” well and take J.J. McCarthy (+180)? If the choice is Drake Maye instead (-275), then McCarthy’s -130 odds of being a top 5 pick hinge on a team (one perhaps from Minnesota) swinging a deal to move up and grab the passer.
Also on our radar: are the Malik Nabers as first wide receiver drafted rumors (+400) instead of long-presumed favorite Marvin Harrison Jr. (-900) for real?
And how many quarterbacks ultimately come off the board in Round 1? The total is set at 4.5, so if you think Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix make it to Round 2, toss up your Hail Mary now.
How We’re Feeling Today
Excited for a tradition unlike any other to unfold tonight. And no, they aren’t playing two Masters tournaments in one year.
No, we are referring to the annual chorus of boos that Jets fans unleash on whatever poor soul the team drafts.
It could be a can’t miss prospect or a punter from a D-3 college. Doesn’t matter to this group. Also doesn’t matter that the draft is being held in Detroit, not in the swamps of Jersey where most of these creatures reside.
The only thing that matters is a rude welcome to a cursed franchise.
Whoever gets on stage and is handed a Jets jersey is going to hear it from the crowd. Get used to it now kid. It probably won’t get any better.
The Look Ahead
Brayden Point SOG – It’s almost desperation time for the Lightning, who return home down 0-2 to a real Stanley Cup contender in Florida. Point’s already got a goal and an assist in the series, but managed just one shot on goal in Game 2’s loss. However, he finished the regular season with five games of 3+ shots and had four SOG in Game 1. His line for tonight is 2.5 SOG, but we expect a little more from the Tampa forward.
OG Anunoby POINTS – Anunoby is averaging 10.5 points in this season’s playoffs, so a 10.5 line for tonight is tight. In four regular season games against the Sixers, Anunoby cleared the 11-point mark, and the Knicks forward missed a chunk of time due to injury, so if he’s still getting his legs under him a bit, expecting a touch of improvement isn’t too big an ask.
