Aaron Rodgers and the Jets are ready to try this thing again…
but it won’t be any easier in 2024. Meanwhile, Jared Goff and the Lions are happy to keep the good times rolling in Detroit.
Liftoff Part 2 for Rodgers, Jets
What Happened: On Tuesday morning, the NFL announced that the San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets would meet in 2024’s inaugural edition of Monday Night Football.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers had his debut as a Jet ruined after just four plays in last season’s opener, and while Gang Green did end up winning that game in an overtime thriller, you’ll excuse New York fans who are feeling a sense of dread about another Week 1 matchup.
Why It Matters: Rodgers will get a second chance at making a first impression as a Jet, but the schedule makers didn’t do him any favors.
FanDuel currently lists the 49ers at +550 to win Super Bowl 2025, better than any other NFL team. (Yes, including the defending champion Chiefs, who are at +600.)
The Jets don’t even land inside the top-10 at +2700. If they catch a 49ers team out to make a statement in its first game since another Super Bowl failure, Rodgers and the Jets are going to kick off another season in an unpleasant fashion.
How We’re Feeling Today
Jealous of Jared Goff, obviously.
The Detroit Lions just rewarded their quarterback handsomely, with Goff earning a contract extension worth $212 million over the next four seasons.
It’s been quite a glow-up for Goff. Scapegoated by Sean McVay for the Rams’ failure in Super Bowl LIII, salary-dumped on the Lions (who even got the Rams to send over a first round pick just to take on Goff’s old contract) and now look at him.
The Lions appear built to contend for the next several seasons under head coach Dan Campbell and with Goff under center. Whatever Goff has pulled off since his trade from Los Angeles to Detroit, that’s what we call the best revenge.
The Look Ahead
David Pastrňák POINTS – We can’t imagine Pasta goes quietly into the night with Boston’s season on the line. The Bruins are down 3-1 in this series to the Panthers and on the road. We aren’t sure they have enough to claw back a game here, but Pastrňák has recorded a point in three of four games. If his running mate Brad Marchand can return to the lineup tonight, we’ll like Pastrňák’s chances to again record at least one point.
Rudy Gobert POINTS – Gobert carries a line of 10.5 points into tonight, a mark he has exceeded in four of seven playoff games. With the Timberwolves and Nuggets tied up at two games apiece, and most of the defensive attention on Anthony Edwards, Gobert should get plenty of clean looks at the basket. For a player who averaged 14 a game this regular season, we think he can get to the over on this line tonight.
