Mike McDaniel, Tua Tagovailoa

The stage for tomorrow’s Dolphins-Packers showdown is a big one.

For Miami, the stakes are even bigger…

Now Or Never For Fins

What Happened: Featuring a 5-6 team on Thanksgiving may not seem all that exciting for the NFL. That is, until you realize two things: 1. The 2-9 Giants and 4-7 Cowboys will face off on Turkey Day with absolutely nothing on the line beyond which team is less humiliated by the end, and 2. The aforementioned 5-6 team, the Miami Dolphins, have plenty to play for.

Why It Matters: Per Austin Mock of The Athletic ($), Miami’s result tomorrow against the Packers is the third-most consequential of Week 13 in the NFL. Pit a desperate team against one in a pretty comfortable position (Green Bay’s 93.9% playoff odds will barely budge with a win or loss) and you have the makings of an entertaining game.

The Dolphins, per Mock, currently have a 32.8% chance of qualifying for the postseason. You can find odds for Miami to qualify as short as +210 and as long as +240 as of this writing.

With a loss, the Fins would still have a 1-in-5 chance to play meaningful games in January. But a win? Suddenly, Mike McDaniel’s team would be a coin flip from making or missing out on a playoff berth.

There’s your guide to Thanksgiving football: if you are a Packers fan, root against the Lions early but don’t sweat the outcome of your team’s game. Giants and Cowboys fans, be grateful you get to spend time with those you love (and turn the TV off.)

As for Dolphins fans, the season starts tomorrow. Don’t let your happiness hinge on whether your team wins or not, but the playoff picture should be more clear by the time the pumpkin pie hits the table.

What We’re Watching Today

Champions League (3:00 PM ET) – Today’s UCL slate is highlighted by a rematch of the 1981/2018/2022 finals, as Real Madrid take on Liverpool at Anfield. You’ve also got Aston Villa facing off against Juventus, and Lille against Bologna for your viewing pleasure.

Thunder at Warriors (10:00 PM ET) – We’ll definitely be checking in on Knicks-Mavs earlier in the night, but this is the stand out NBA game tonight. A single game separates these two teams atop the Western Conference standings, but the Warriors have dropped two straight while OKC is coming off back-to-back victories.

The Look Ahead

Sebastian Aho SOG This feels like an ideal matchup for the Hurricanes’ second-leading shot taker. Only Anaheim (33.7) allows more shots on net than the Rangers (33.2), and Aho’s line of 3.5 SOG is not a tough one to clear. He got four shots on goal against Columbus on Saturday, and we’ve seen him put as many as nine on the goalie in one game this season, so we’ll take him to challenge Igor Shesterkin plenty tonight.
