Moving Market For Denver-New Orleans
What Happened: As if the New Orleans Saints didn’t have enough to worry about tonight.
Heading into Thursday Night Football against the Denver Broncos, Dennis Allen’s team had to prepare for its longtime coach, now on the other sideline. The potential for a revenge game looms.
Now, the Saints will need to make sure they can field a professional-grade offense (something Sean Payton never had a problem doing when he was in charge.) Injuries are cropping up, and the Saints’ offense, which already had cooled off considerably from its hot start to the season, is a compromised unit.
Why It Matters: Kudos if you got your plays down before this game’s line moved! (How are we betting it? You’ll have to join the team to get that good stuff.)
New Orleans was a 0.5-point favorite to open, but with Derek Carr, Chris Olave, and Rashid Shaheed all expected to be watching from the sidelines, the visiting Broncos are now a 2.5-3.0 point favorite, depending on your book of choice.
Finally a little respect for Denver? Payton’s new team is 3-0 against the spread this season, although they haven’t been favored as the away team until tonight.
Either way, don’t tune in expecting a bonanza of points, even with the over/under in this one set at 37. Over the last three NFL seasons, primetime games have gone under 81 times, compared to just 52 times to the over (and a lone push in there for good measure.)
What We’re Watching Today
Broncos at Saints (8:15 PM ET) – Lots of injuries, short rest for both teams, and two rookie signal callers under center? Phewf buddy, this thing is gonna be tough to watch. (But easy to bet on if you’re on a VIP package with us!)
Yankees at Guardians (5:08 PM ET) – The Yanks have scored 11 runs through two games of this series, although the venue changes to Cleveland tonight. But the Guardians’ home was a top-10 stadium in giving offenses a boost, so the Bombers might continue even outside of the Bronx.
Dodgers at Mets (8:08 PM ET) – Jose Quintana hasn’t allowed an earned run yet this postseason in two starts and 11.0 innings. That would come in handy for the Mets tonight, who aren’t gonna survive giving up nearly seven runs a game to the Dodgers, which is what they are doing entering tonight’s pivotal Game 4.
The Look Ahead
Bo Nix ANYTIME TOUCHDOWN – With the Saints offense decimated by injuries, and Denver missing its top cornerback in Patrick Surtain II, Sean Payton is likely to attack New Orleans’ subpar rushing defense and control the clock via his team’s ground game. Rushing responsibilities have been divided among Javonte Williams and Jaleel McLaughlin, but its QB Nix that is second on the team in carries behind Williams. The rookie passer (runner?) has recorded 25+ rushing yards in four of his six starts and found the end zone three times. Look for Payton to focus less on throwing and more on the ground attack, which will suit this play just fine.
