What Happened: It seemed to work for a while.
At least Woody Johnson can hang his hat on that after watching new Jets coach Jeff Ulbrich in action last night. The team scored double-digit points in the game’s first quarter, only the second time this season the team hit 10+ points in a single period.
Of course, things went downhill from there — seven points in Q2, a lone field goal in the third, and a doughnut in the game’s final frame. Another loss after a performance riddled with penalties and mistakes. What’s a team to do as its hopes for success flicker and dim?
Double-down time.
Why It Matters: Yup, despite falling to third place in the AFC East, the Jets continue to go all-in, sending a third-round pick to the Raiders in exchange for WR Davante Adams.
Sure, this will make Aaron Rodgers happy. At least until the postseason arrives, which the Jets will probably be watching from home.
Currently, the Jets are +140 to make the playoffs and -176 to miss them, courtesy of DraftKings. In order to make that plus-money play a reality, Adams will need to be listed on the roster not as receiver, but miracle worker.
What We’re Watching Today
Guardians at Yankees (7:38 PM ET) – In Game 1, the Bronx Bombers hardly had to swing the bat, as Guardian pitchers walked nine batters and uncorked five (!) wild pitches. But when the Yanks did get a pitch they liked, they made it worthwhile, homering twice in a 5-2 win. With Gerrit Cole on the mound tonight, New York has to feel good about going up 2-0 in the ALCS. But remember, the series doesn’t start until the home team loses Cleveland.
The Look Ahead
Gerrit Cole STRIKEOUTS – While the Yankees should feel confident with Cole on the hill, we aren’t overly optimistic about him hitting the over on his 5.5 strikeout line for tonight’s start. Cole has failed to top that line in four of his most recent five starts, including both postseason ones. Only three teams struck out less often than the Guardians did in the regular season, which is why we are eyeing the under here.
