What Happened: We’ve all had frustrating days at the golf course, let’s be honest. But Scottie Scheffler took it to a whole new level Friday morning.
On his way to Valhalla Golf Club to for his 10:08 tee time at the PGA Championship, Scheffler ended up in handcuffs and charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals. Still made his tee time though!
Why It Matters: It feels like there are two ways to proceed upon hearing this news.
On the one hand, how does he keep his composure and focus after such an ordeal? Scheffler started the day with better odds (+400) than any other golfer in the field to win the Championship besides Xander Schauffele. Surely this is going to affect the world’s top-ranked golfer.
On the other hand, Scheffler is as good as he is precisely because he is able to tune out distractions and keep a laser-like focus in the toughest conditions. Getting arrested hours before playing a pressure-soaked round might just amplify Scheffler’s superpower. Heck, if he ends up winning the tournament, he might consider engaging in some low-level crime before every event, just to get in the right headspace…
How We’re Feeling Today
Feeling like Diana Taurasi was pretty spot on about Caitlin Clark.
Back in April, Taurasi warned that the WNBA wasn’t going to be a cakewalk for Clark. The veteran, now in her 20th WNBA season, made clear that the physicality of the pro game was going to be something Clark has to adjust to. It wouldn’t be all raining down 3s like it was at Iowa.
Well, so far, Taurasi appears to have nailed it. Clark has played just two regular season games, but she’s struggled in both. She dropped 20 points in her debut, but managed just nine against the Liberty last night in a blowout loss. She has also racked up 13 turnovers already.
In all likelihood, Clark is going to be just fine in the long run. But anyone who thought she was going to stroll into the W and average 30 like she did in college was way off base.
The Look Ahead
Sam Bennett POINTS – If you are looking for a plus-money play for tonight, you could do worse than the Panthers center to record a point. After missing five games because of a wrist injury, Bennett returned for Florida’s Game 3 against the Bruins and immediately registered an assist, then added a goal in Game 4. Plus, in last season’s run to the Stanley Cup final, Bennett tallied 15 points in 20 postseason games, so we know he can produce when Florida needs him most.
