Brandon Aiyuk

An NFL star could be changing teams; why bettors should be eying that closely…

Plus, an Olympics viewing guide in search of gold.

Aiyuk On The Move?

What Happened: The San Francisco 49ers’ defense of their NFC crown is off to a bumpy start. Star left tackle Trent Williams is currently holding out of training camp while he seeks a raise in pay. Williams is no stranger to playing the long game, so it seems unlikely he’ll cave before the Niners do.

Now, word out of San Francisco is that, in a reversal by the team’s front office, not only will they listen to trade offers for dynamic wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, but they’ve given him permission to negotiate a new deal with any teams interested in his services. It certainly seems like Aiyuk’s already got one cleat out the door.

Why It Matters: Fans of the Patriots and Browns, the two teams cited most frequently as Aiyuk’s likely trade destinations, will love this development. But what about the rest of those NFL fans? What are they to make of this?

Here’s a thought: does an Aiyuk trade make him a more viable candidate for an end-of-season award?

To be clear, the MVP award is solely the domain of quarterbacks these days. But non-throwers have the Offensive Player of the Year award to compete for, and a receiver has won that three times in the last five seasons.

Aiyuk’s currents odds to capture that award, per ESPN Bet? +10000, a fair bit down the pecking order. 41 players currently have better odds, including 18 other wideouts, as-of-now teammate Deebo Samuel included.

But those are odds on Aiyuk in an offense in which he has to share one football with Christian McCaffrey, Samuel, George Kittle, and whatever Kyle Shanahan cooks up for Kyle Juszczyk. Aiyuk would become a one-man band on a team such as the Patriots, potentially boosting his stats to legit contender status.

Aiyuk finished seventh in the NFL in receiving yards despite San Francisco’s stacked depth chart. He would surely lose something without Shanahan’s play-calling wizardry, but his target volume could go up substantially, perhaps even to an award-winning level.

What We’re Watching Today

Mallory Swanson

Women’s Soccer Semifinal, USA vs. Germany (12:00 PM ET) – Both of these teams had to scrape and claw their way to this matchup. Team USA needed an extra-time goal to advance past Japan, while Germany needed PKs to get by Canada and its drones. The red, white, and blue’s attack cooled off last game, but it’ll need to get back on track to power America through and past a German team that lost 4-1 when these teams met in the group stage.

Men’s Basketball, Knockout Stage, USA vs. Brazil (3:30 PM ET) – Tuning in here to watch the eventual gold medal winners seems like a no brainer. LeBron James is a delight to watch orchestrating this offense of NBA studs, and Kevin Durant needs just four points to pass Lisa Leslie as USA Basketball’s all-time leading Olympics scorer. Brazil, you had a good run.

Women’s Beach Volleyball Quarterfinal, USA vs. Switzerland (4:00 PM ET) – Pure vibes viewing here. While you wind down the work day, what better way to relax than by imagining it’s YOUR feet in the sand with pump up music blasting all around you. Bonus points for the contrast when the camera pans out and you get an immaculate view of the Eiffel Tower. Makes us wanna throw on a beret and munch on a croissant.

The Look Ahead

Trea Turner TOTAL BASES The Phillies still lead the NL East, but for how much longer? The team has dropped eight of 10 and now have Atlanta (5.5 games back) and the Mets (7.0) on its heels. Crying out for a spark, we think Turner can be that guy today. Philly’s shortstop has hit his old teammate (and tonight’s starter for the Dodgers) Clayton Kershaw well in the past, collecting 10 hits in 22 at-bats. We like Turner, playing in the ballpark he used to call home, to deliver on the over of his 1.5 total bases line for tonight.
